Summer Activities
To kick-start summer, here are a couple of ideas that you can do with your little one! You can even do these as a family!
Water Ball Scoop
This one is not only super easy to setup, but it's brilliant for your babies fine motor skills. Adding the water makes the little balls float, which is fun, and also great for sensory input!
Steps:
- Fill up a tub with water, or two if you have an extra
- Add around 15 plastic balls into the water
- Rummage through your utensils drawer, and get a slotted spoon or a sieve - anything 'scoopey' will do, really!
- Enjoy!
Finger Paints
Add a splash of colour to your day by making some taste-safe finger paints, and getting super creative. These paints can last years once they're dry!
This is another super simple 4 ingredient recipe, all you need is:
- 1/2 a cup of cornflour
- 3 tablespoons of sugar
- 2 cups of water
- a sprinkle of salt!
- Natural food colouring
Steps
- Mix everything together with the cold water for about 5 min, you want this to be a custard-like consistency
- Separate into different pots for all your colours for each colour you want to make
- Add your food colouring
- Add your salt
- Find some paper and get creative!
Oh, if you're wondering about the salt, it does two things — it helps the paint to dry with vivid colours, and it keeps your little ones from wanting to eat it. But if you want a truly edible paint, you can omit the salt.
Have fun - you can use these paints for finger painting, or even messy play!
Summer Snack Recipes
These delicious and nutritious recipes can be enjoyed as a light meal or breakfast. This is deal for those 12 months and older - did you know that babies under 12 months don't typically need snacks?
Let's get cooking!
Banana Biscuits (3 Ingredients)
These cookies are delicious, soft, and healthy and they're also super easy to bake!
Here's what you'll need:
- 1 large, ripe banana
- 2 tablespoons of peanut butter (try to use one with as few additives and salt as possible!)
- 180 grams of self-raising flour
Instructions:
- In a bowl, mash the banana with the back of your fork and stir in the peanut butter to form a mixture
- Pour in the flour and combine to form a dough using a spoon or your hands. (This can be a great step to get your little one involved in!)
- Roll out the dough to around 1/2 a cm in thickness
- Cut into your desired shapes (they can be anything!) and trim off any excess dough, to repeat the process
- Cook in the oven at 180c for 10-12 mins till cooked
We recommend you leave to cool for around 5-10 minutes before serving.
Banana & Berry Oat Bars (4 Ingredients)
These bars are one of our most popular recipes, and we're sure you'll love them too.
Here's what you'll need:
- 1 cup of rolled oats
- a handful of blueberries
- 50 grams of melted butter, or you can replace this with some smooth nut butter
- 1 and a half ripe bananas
Tip: you can easily swap the blueberries to whatever berries are in season at the time of baking!
Instructions:
- If using a blender, blend bananas until smooth. Then add blueberries and pulse to break them down a little. Alternatively, you can mash the banana very well (the better it’s mashed, the better it can bind) and slightly chop the blueberries so they can distribute more evenly
- Place all ingredients into a bowl and mix well
- Line a small container with baking paper and place the mix inside
- Press down, place another sheet of baking paper on top then another container on top (to press down and keep shape) but you can skip this step if you don’t mind your bars slightly uneven
- Cook in the oven at 165C for 25-30 minutes
- Remove, let them cool and place in the fridge overnight
- Portion into 20g rectangle shapes and serve!
You can always enjoy it straight away once it’s cooled down but it may not hold the shape as well. These can last in the fridge for 2-3 days.
